Over eighty golfers participated in a golf fundraising day at Sudbury Golf Course on Friday, 27th April 2018 in aid of the ‘Search for David Gavin Fund’. The fund was set up by David’s family to raise money to finance a search party for his missing remains in Canada.
David (26) and his partner Ciara moved from Breaffy, Castlebar, Co. Mayo, Ireland to Canada in March 2017. As a keen and talented GAA footballer he quickly joined ISSC Vancouver, the local GAA club. On Friday, June 30th 2017, David and his friends were on a 10 hour drive to a GAA tournament in Calgary. It was a sweltering hot day, consequently they stopped off for a swim in Kinbasket Lake in British Columbia. David and some of his friends jumped in off a bridge for a swim, tragically David failed to resurface, presumed drowned. Extensive searches last year were unsuccessful and were called off in late Autumn due to bad weather conditions and a rising water level in the lake.
The lake was scheduled to be at its lowest water level for this year during late April and May 2018. His family organised a search party for this period.
Thankfully, David’s remains were found on Saturday 28th April 2018 by the search party. David’s parents, Mick and Angela and partner Ciara were present when his remains were discovered by the search party, just 30m from where he had jumped in from the bridge.
David’s father Michael said, “we feel most fortunate to have found David in what has been described here as a most beautiful but unforgiving landscape”.
The Golf Fundraising day has raised a substantial sum which will help aid the cost of the search party, the family’s travel expenses and the cost of bringing David’s remains home to Breaffy, Castlebar, Co. Mayo for burial where David can be laid to rest, may he rest in peace.
“Modebest wish to sincerely thank all of our generous sponsors, the participating golfers and our staff who helped organise this successful Golf Fundraising day.”
